The question is are you depressed because you’re not making money, or are you not making money because you’re depressed? Running a business can be an extremely stressful undertaking, particularly when you are running a business single-handedly that really needs different people taking care of different aspects of the business in order for the business to run efficiently from day to day. And when you are not seeing the fruits of your labor, when you’re not making the kind of money you want to make, stress can overwhelm you to the point where you become increasingly frustrated and begin to deteriorate mentally and emotionally.
The problem with trying to run a business when you are feeling depressed is that depression, as the word suggests, is a deflator of energy, motivation and will. A mind influenced by depression is a clouded mind, an unsettled and distracted mind that lacks the clarity and focus necessary for the creative thinking, problem solving sharpness needed by anyone who hopes to successfully run a business. Depression depletes, enervates, emotionally drains and mentally incapacitates where inspiration, energy, enthusiasm and capacity are required if success is to be the outcome of any undertaken enterprise. And depression is more responsible for your inability to achieve success, than your inability to achieve success is responsible for your depression.
Indeed it is frustrating to continually struggle, to work sixteen hours of a 24 hour day, to work 7 days per week and 365 days per year chasing after a particular goal that eludes you time and time again. The struggle in itself can trigger feelings of desperation and hopelessness; but before these feelings of desperation and hopelessness can begin to poison your system as they must do in order to begin the process of depressing you sufficiently to impair your judgment, you first would have to make a choice, whether consciously or subconsciously to swallow the poison. And once you swallow the poison, once your conscious mind is thinking only in negative terms, even if you continue the struggle, continue to work sixteen hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year chasing after that elusive goal, your lack of enthusiasm, your lack of belief, your depleted energy and depleted will, and your impaired capacity to think and act, undermine your efforts significantly and do more to thwart your chances of success than what triggered the feelings of desperation and hopelessness to begin with.
Nowadays there is medication you can take to treat depression; but not all depression follow the same patterns, and often what is really unmanaged stress can share symptoms with depression. A business person experiencing feelings of desperation and hopelessness who is convinced that making money will obliterate these desperate, hopeless feelings, might want to take the time to examine how they are contributing to their own inability to succeed at their ambitions by trying to run a business under the influence of thoughts and emotions that by their nature are designed to yield failure. A business person in such a state of mind does not have the problem of needing to feel happy in order to achieve success, so balancing their serotonin level will not guarantee them business success. Depression medication places you in an altered state, some lulling you into a sense of calm that inevitably slows your mental faculties, others energizing you so that you can barely manage to sit still.
If you are a small business owner who is depressed because you are not making the kind of money you want to make, the best thing you can do for yourself is to understand and accept that it requires a clear and focused mind, positive use of energy, capacity, belief, knowledge and unwavering determination to build and maintain a successful business; and these needed elements do not come in a capsule you can pop three times per day. If you’re distracted, doubtful, unclear, hesitant, unaware, uninspired, unenthusiastic, lacking energy, then you are in a state of negativity that is non-conducive to productivity, creativity, or positive activity; and the result of your efforts will generally be failure which triggers depression which further impairs you, making success unlikely. So get focused. Believe. Seek clarity. Act. Get informed. Seek inspiration. Heighten your enthusiasm. Energize yourself. Avoid getting trapped in the cycle of being depressed because you’re not making money, and not making money because you’re depressed.
